Changes Upstream - the Photographs of Stanley G. Triggs

Travel Journal

Notes kept by Stanley to document his journey down the river.

Tuesday August 18

Changed mind and decided to head for home, Nelson, that is. Drove around a bit, showing Louise some parts of the valley she had not seen, especially Ostreich's ranch. Then returned Ben Palmer's milk can which he had lent us for water, said good byes and took off.

Mrs. Ostreich told us that her husband had been going to buy Surveyor Lake and Baynes Lake and 350 acres plus the store at Baynes Lake for 23 thousand dollars from Bert Saunders but 2 days before the deal was finalized Saunders went to Cranbrook and met up with some business men who with the aid of a bottle of whisky or two sold all but the store and the adjacent ground for 12 thousand dollars. Needless to say the Ostreich's were extremely disappointed - arrived in Nelson about 3 or 4 pm, all well - father in the tub. Mum down at Webster's so Fane and I went to pick her up visited there a while. Mr. Webster as hearty and as full of fun as ever.
