THE WEST ARM ROUTE

This route along the West Arm of Kootenay Lake from Procter west to Nelson connected many the small settlements to the city of Nelson before the establishment of Highway 3A. Many of the landings were flag stops - not regularly scheduled, and not part of the scheduled route of the Crow Boat or other express runs. In places, the pilings from these landings are still visible. Today, osprey, great blue heron and Canada geese use them as perches and nesting sites.

The locations of the various landings along the shores of Kootenay Lake and the West Arm are approximations. For some of the landings the only evidence of settlement is the pilings left standing in the water. In other locations all evidence of the landings has been removed and is only visible during low water levels in the spring.
