Touring the restored SS Moyie in Kaslo, visitors see a sternwheeler as it was when it transported passengers and goods up and down Kootenay Lake. Unfortunately, most of the other ships that worked on Kootenay Lake have been lost to fire, accidents or time. Images of these ships under construction, working, docked and decorated for special events, hold a higher value with the loss of the ships themselves. Some vessels remain at the bottom of the lake, some appear in the early spring when water levels are low, and some live on in sections that were salvaged or rescued when their time was up as transportation vehicles.
In the Galleries, explore the different ships and their offerings. From the architectural details that showcase the talent and fine craftsmanship that elevated the ships from point to point transportation to grand excursion, to some of their final resting spots and historic landings and settlements that were serviced by the ships, these images provide both archival and contemporary views of the sternwheelers of Kootenay Lake and beyond.
